Yes, it’s annoying and can be scary to have this conversation with all these people. I’m a shy person, but I would rather have this awkward discussion than an allergic reaction. I find people are usually very understanding and will do their best to accommodate you. It also educates them about a rare allergy so they can better help another person in the future.
I was at Sephora the other day, when one of the sales associates noticed me reading the ingredient list on the back of some skin care item. They asked if I needed help and we chatted for a bit about the sale they have going on. When they made some skin care recommendations, I mentioned my glycerin allergy. They then asked what products I use so they could help any future customers with the same issue. That made my day because it was the first time that had ever happened.
At all my medical, optical, and dental appointments I am sure to list my glycerin allergy before all others so that it doesn’t get overlooked.
Oh, and don’t forget to inform anyone living with you. There’s nothing quite like taking a shower with all safe products but my feet still end up itching because my Sweetie used something that wasn’t glycerin free. And unless they want to end up washing all the dishes and doing any other cleaning around the house, they have to know to read all ingredient lists just like you. On a more serious note, they would be able to inform others if you are unable to communicate during a medical emergency.
